Military family: Read the article below Porter, A. O. (2013). An examination of a case study with a military family and its involvement with child protective services. Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, 23(6), 777-788. Question Using concepts from the military family case study in the article, what mental health issues would you be alert for in a military family?
Mental Health Issues in Military Family
According to the highlights in Porter (2013), the structure of military families is “unique” as it exposes both the parents and children to stressful experiences that are tied to the nature of military service. Notably, some of these challenges include the frequent relocation and deployment, the return of parents with both mental and physical wounds and increased demand on at-home-parents. According to the study, domestic violence and child maltreatments are common experiences among these families. The demanding experiences can compromise the psychological and behavioral development of children. Pointedly, while some families have effectively managed the extended separation and repeated deployments, it has not been the case for most families.
Arguably, the way parents’ responds to stressors play a significant role on the way their children would respond to these stressors. In this light, a significant number of children that have experienced maltreatment come to the attention of behavioral health providers within the military structure (Trautmann, Alhusen & Gross, 2015). This fact sheet profiles maltreatment among children from military families. Children in this settings are exposed to a series of maltreatment including neglect mental, physical abuse, as a result of exposure to domestic violence.
Conclusively, the implication of military family on family development is that in a significant number of these families, the stress that is attributed by deployments and the absence of both parents is likely to impair the ability of parents to manage their behaviors and emotions hence psychological development of their children.Though the challenges experienced by military families are linked to the high rate of mental health issues and increased health care among use among families, there exists series of structures and approaches (including family support and alternative care services) that have been noted to promote resilience.
