Tough, H., Siegrist, J., &Fekete, C. (2017). Social relationships, mental health, and wellbeing in physical disability: a systematic review. BMC public health, 17(1), 414.

Data collection method: The study employs secondary data collection. Secondary data is one that has already been published in journals, magazines, and books among other sources. There is an abundance of studies that tackle the effect of social connections on physical and mental health and wellbeing. The criteria for the search used in this study involved searching for relevant studies in various databases including PsycINFO, PubMed, and Scopus. The timeline for publish of the articles was from 1995 to 2016. 63 studies were selected for analysis by the researchers.

Research design: The research design adopted by this research is the systematic review design. The study has utilized systematic methods in the collection of secondary data. The study also involves a critical appraisal of the selected studies and synthesis of findings. As a systematic research, the study has formulated a research question and the authors have identified and synthesized studies that directly relate to that question. This research design has enabled the authors to provide an exhaustive and complete summary of evidence relevant to the research question.

Arguments of the authors: The researchers explain that studies have shown a favorable exchange with an individual’s social environment has positive impacts on their mental health and wellbeing. They posit that people who have physical disabilities have fewer opportunities for favorable social exchange and hence their mental health and wellbeing is negatively impacted.

Findings: The study determines that social relationships are crucial for the mental health and wellbeing of persons with disabilities. The systematic review determined that social networks were associated with depression but not other forms of mental health issues. The study also showed that negative social interactions, family functioning, and quality of relationships had consistent associations with mental health and wellbeing. The study concluded that in integrating people with disabilities into the society should involve high-quality relationship tailored to offer support to these people.

Mao, Z. H., & Zhao, X. D. (2014).The effects of social connections on self-rated physical and mental health among internal migrant and local adolescents in Shanghai, China.BMC Public Health, 12(1), 97.

Data collection method: The method of data collection adopted by this study was that of using a questionnaire to gather primary data. The questionnaire is a research instrument that consists of a series of questions and which the researchers used to gather information from respondents. The sample was made up of middle school students studying in Shanghai. The questions were concerned with the health status, social connections, and demographic factors of these students.

Research design: This study is an example of observational research and specifically uses a cross-sectional research design. An observational research design is a non-experimental study whereby behavior is systematically observed and recorded with the objective of obtaining a snapshot of particular characteristics of the group under investigation. A cross-sectional study is a type of observational research that analyzes data from a sample of a population at a given time. The sample should be large enough to allow for estimation of prevalence of conditions of interest with sufficient precision. The investigators then used the Chi-square analysis, t-test, and a series of regression models to explore the impact of social connections and compare differences in health outcomes.

Arguments of the author: The investigators posited that social connections influence the physical and mental health of immigrant children and adolescents. They argue that migration and its related processes affect the health of people involved and that it is important for these people to form appropriate social relationships in order to ensure positive health outcomes.

Findings: The study concluded that migrant adolescents showed a significant physical health advantage but a disadvantage in terms of mental health. Even though they were in good physical health, their inadequate social connections resulted in lower self-esteem and a high risk of depression. The researchers determined that there was a connection between family cohesion and depressive symptoms as well as low self-esteem. The study also determined that social cohesion and peer association had significant impacts on the wellbeing of adolescents.

Social support involves having a network of friend and family that a person interacts with. Psychologists and other mental health professionals explain that it is important to have a strong social support network as it impacts one’s physical and mental health being. Studies including Tough et al. (2017) and Mao & Zhao (2014) have indicated that there is a direct link between lack of social connections and support and the health or wellbeing of an individual. The findings of these studies indicate that it is important to have good relationships with others. I have learned that social relationships have the same impact on one’s physical health just like smoking and exercises. I understand that the quality and quantity of relationships have a powerful impact on health across my lifespan. People with a large size of the social network have higher levels of health and well-being. As such, I would strive to build strong relationships with my friends and family members as a way to ensure that I would have high levels of physical and mental health wellbeing.
