The academy also uses evidence-based knowledge to spar scientific progress and innovation that goes toward solving various issues affecting society (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, n.d.). For example, combating current epidemics, human resource issues in healthcare, and improving access to care, to list a few. Lastly, the academy plays a significant role in sparing the culture of evidence-based research to tackle societal issues, not only at the national level but also globally. These functions are what led to the development of the “Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity.” The report aimed to address the issues that are affecting the realization of health equity and possible solutions aimed at addressing those issues. Trends in Nursing Workforce and Practice The organization of nursing workforce has been changing over time. One of the areas of change is increased specialty in nursing practice. The nursing workforce is becoming more diverse with changing population and healthcare service trends. Many nurses are specializing in areas that have more demand in terms of skills and higher monetary rewards (Chamberlain et al., 2019). In turn, nursing education is shifting towards providing content that addresses the various specialties and changing population and healthcare demands. For example, the incorporation of technology use as an essential component of the nursing education syllabus as a result of increased technology use as a supporting element within the nursing practice (Altmiller & Pepe, 2022). A nother trend is the increase in nurses with higher education post-bachelors degree (Fawaz et al., 2018). Many registered nurses are opting to increase their education level to make themselves more marketable and responsive to current healthcare needs. In turn, nursing schools are trying to expand their resources to accommodate the increased enrollment. Nurses form the majority of the healthcare workforce, making them a major stakeholder in directing change within the industry. One of the ways nurses are leading change is by participating in policy development (Auerbach et al., 2020). Nurses also play a significant role in identifying lacking areas, including potential causes of inequity, and coming up with solutions through change initiatives to solve those issues, for example, promoting advanced nurse practice autonomy of practice to improve efficiency in healthcare human resource use. Role of State-Based Action Coalitions. State-based coalitions are a culmination of stakeholders and partners led by nurses who leverage the power of the community to build healthier communities and the nation. State-based coalitions merge their resources to support groups that face healthcare disparities within communities.
