Self-Assessment

Self-awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self-assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self-leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection as directed below.

Refer to the Topic 2 Resources. Select and complete three self-assessments. Be sure to document the results of each assessment to assist you in completing the reflection portion of the assignment below.

Self-Assessment Reflection

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

In a 1,000-1,250-word reflective essay, address the following:

  1. Provide a rationale and brief summary for selecting each self-assessment. Summarize the results you obtained on each assessment.
  2. Identify the leadership style that closely aligns to your philosophy of care and explain what appeals to you about that style.
  3. Reflect on how you might incorporate elements of that particular style as you exercise leadership in a practice or health care organization setting.
  4. Discuss any particular areas for improvement the assessments helped you identify and some steps for improving your leadership capabilities.
  5. Analyze the characteristics of an effective professional nurse leader, or individuals in nursing leadership. Discuss the characteristics and explain why they are effective for leadership in nursing.
  6. Analyze different leadership theories and leadership styles. Select one theory and leadership style, different from your own, and explain how they each support a professional nurse leader or individual in nursing leadership. Consider how the theory shapes the nurse leader in such things as collaboration, conflict resolution, decision-making, and negotiation.

Leadership Style in Nursing

Great leadership skills are critical in nursing, and especially important is a self-awareness that is essential to the act of effective leadership. Self-assessments can help the individuals to understand their strong and weak points to improve their leadership approaches (Younas et al., 2021). Tracing back, this essay evaluates the answer three taken self-assessments to find out the personal leadership attributes, emotional intelligence and the traits. The results can be useful with respect to leadership style, areas for development for leaders, and approaches to enhancing leadership skills in a health care environment. Skills developed by nurses help to build teamwork, development of the professional role, a supportive and efficient health care environment.

Self-Assessment Selection and Summary of Results

I decided to have three self-assessments which gave me a general idea of what personal leadership abilities that I have: The Emotional Intelligence Test, the Big Five Personality Test and a Leadership Style Assessment. In measuring emotional regulation, self-awareness and interpersonal skills which are important in nursing leadership, the Emotional Intelligence Test was selected (Bru Luna et al., 2021). The results of the test were very high in their ability to control their emotions and empathize with people but they had some room for improvement in the way they deal with stress.

Most appropriate to us has been the selection of the Big Five Personality Test to assess key personality traits that influence leadership capacity behaviour (Nehra et al., 2022). High conscientiousness and agreeableness are present in the results, as well, which are key predictors of successful teamwork and ethical decision making. Nevertheless, extraversion covering moderate levels implied that leadership roles should be developed with greater assertiveness.

Fischer and Sitkin (2023) learned the Leadership Style Assessment that lets in in on the leadership fashion that most nearly fits properly with individual values and beliefs. The result showed that individuals prefer transformational leadership that motivates, collaborates and constantly improves. This thus paves way for a specific approach to leadership development; focusing on areas of development whilst bolding on strengths in addressing challenges.

Preferred Leadership Style and Its Appeal

Transformational leadership is the leadership style closely related to how my philosophy of care would be put into practice. I like this style since it promotes nursing environment of trust, motivation and shared vision which are very important when it comes to nursing (Haoyan et al., 2023). Transformational leaders encourage innovation, provide for professional development and promote care of the patient.

It is this leadership style which makes it such an effective means of leadership in nursing practice as it permits for creating meaningful relationships with fellow colleagues and patients as well as an ongoing quest for continual improvement (Haoyan et al., 2023). The transformational leadership values open communication and flexibility which are need of the hour in the dynamic healthcare environment today. This is the style of leadership that I believe resonates with my core values of mentoring, engagement and collaboration.

Application of Transformational Leadership in Practice

The transformational leadership elements which should be incorporated into a healthcare setting are mentorship, collaboration and professional growth. When I am a nurse leader, I intend to focus on the team engagement, therefore encourage staff to offer their ideas and take ownership of their roles. Encouraging a unity of vision for high quality patient care will have a positive effect on team members’ (Haoyan et al., 2023).

I wish to lead better by listening to my colleagues, give constructive feedback and lead by example in terms of professional integrity. Likewise, transformational leadership necessitates adaptability, therefore continuous learning of the present evidence based practices as well as readiness to change is critical (Haoyan et al., 2023). Not only will it help to improve team performance, but it will also mean staff members are empowered and supported to learn continuously, and as such, be better placed to deliver improved patient outcomes.

Areas for Improvement and Steps for Development

The self-assessments identified specific areas for improvement, including stress management and assertiveness (Haoyan et al., 2023). To enhance my stress management skills, I will implement mindfulness techniques, set realistic goals, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Engaging in self-care and resilience training will help mitigate the impact of workplace stressors (Haoyan et al., 2023). To improve assertiveness, I will focus on developing stronger communication skills, particularly in conflict resolution and decision-making.

Attending leadership development workshops and seeking mentorship from experienced nurse leaders will provide additional support in refining these skills. Establishing clear boundaries and learning to advocate more confidently for both patients and colleagues will further strengthen my leadership abilities (Haoyan et al., 2023). Recognizing that self-improvement is a continuous journey, I plan to engage in ongoing professional development activities that reinforce these essential leadership qualities.

Characteristics of an Effective Nurse Leader

Effective nursing leaders exhibit several key characteristics, including strong communication, emotional intelligence, integrity, and adaptability (James & Bennett, 2024). Clear and transparent communication ensures that team members understand expectations and work cohesively toward common goals. Emotional intelligence enables leaders to manage emotions effectively, fostering a supportive and empathetic work environment. Integrity is crucial for building trust and credibility within healthcare teams, ensuring ethical decision-making (James & Bennett, 2024).

Adaptability allows nurse leaders to navigate complex challenges and implement innovative solutions. These characteristics contribute to the development of a positive workplace culture, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes and organizational success (James & Bennett, 2024). Additionally, an effective nurse leader demonstrates resilience, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to lifelong learning, which ensures that they remain capable of handling the ever-changing demands of the healthcare industry.

Comparison of Leadership Theories and Styles

Several leadership theories and styles influence nursing leadership, including transformational, transactional, and servant leadership. While transformational leadership emphasizes motivation and vision, transactional leadership focuses on structure, rewards, and performance-based incentives (Martinez & Leija, 2023). Transactional leadership may be effective in highly regulated healthcare environments where clear expectations and accountability are necessary (Martinez & Leija, 2023).

Another impactful approach is servant leadership, which prioritizes the well-being and development of team members. Servant leaders focus on empowering others, fostering a sense of community, and placing patient care at the forefront of decision-making (Neville et al., 2021). This leadership style enhances collaboration, improves job satisfaction, and aligns with nursing’s patient-centered philosophy.

One leadership theory that differs from my own approach is situational leadership theory, which suggests that effective leadership is dependent on the specific circumstances and the readiness level of team members (James & Bennett, 2024). Situational leaders adapt their leadership style based on the needs of their staff, whether providing directive guidance or delegating tasks. This theory supports nurse leaders by allowing them to adjust their approach based on individual team members’ skills and experiences (James & Bennett, 2024).

In terms of decision-making and conflict resolution, situational leaders assess the current context and modify their leadership strategy accordingly, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness in dynamic healthcare environments (James & Bennett, 2024). Understanding these theories broadens my perspective on leadership, reinforcing the importance of adaptability and strategic decision-making in nursing practice.

Conclusion

Self-assessments provide valuable insights into leadership strengths and areas for improvement, enabling nursing professionals to develop essential skills for effective leadership. Transformational leadership, which aligns with my personal philosophy of care, emphasizes motivation, collaboration, and professional growth, making it a highly effective approach in healthcare. Identifying areas for improvement, such as stress management and assertiveness, allows for targeted development strategies that enhance leadership capabilities.

Effective nurse leaders demonstrate strong communication, emotional intelligence, integrity, and adaptability, all of which contribute to high-quality patient care and team performance. Understanding different leadership theories and styles, including transactional and servant leadership, provides a broader perspective on how leadership can shape nursing practice.
