I have reviewed the learning goals I set for myself on the discussion board assignment. I chose these goals because they are realistic goals that I have set for myself for this course which are very specific from my own perspective view.
The topic of getting back to school will be very beneficial to my present position because it will help me advance in my career. It will also give me the knowledge to be more efficient in my present role as a nurse manager which will eventually open more doors for advancement in the health care field. Getting started back in school was a big decision and challenge I made in order to fulfill my innermost goals that have been troubling me all these years. I have been a working single parent who has put her education on hold in order to be able to fully support my daughter until she was ready to go to college.
I am so proud that she will be starting her second year in a local university here in Sacramento pursuing her Biological Sciences. Now that my daughter has seen me struggle working two jobs just to make ends meet, I would like to be a role model showing her that hard work and pursuing a good education is the key to success. My education to success really started when I was working as a nursing assistant almost 19 years ago. I was really skilled at what I did and loved working with the middle aged and elderly patients.
I pursued nursing due to encouragement from nurses and completed prerequisites before getting accepted into the LVN program. I worked for 8 years before finally finishing my RN program.
I was eager to learn different basic skills of nursing that most of the nurses encouraged me to go into nursing school. I had done all my nursing prerequisites, but because of competition to get accepted into the nursing program, I got accepted into the LVN program and ended up working for 8 years before going back to finish my RN program.
Now that I am back on track trying to achieve my passion, I aim at making this successful by remodeling different structural pattern of my life style. I first of all have planned to take one course which is three units credit per each session. This is tailored at my own pace in order to avoid being over whelmed.
Financially, I have cut back on a lot of expenses which will keep me under financial control whilst in school. I have also created a school schedule well in advance which will allow both for my work schedule and family commitments. I have also involved my entire family at home to get extra help with household chores. With these realistic goals for getting started, I am striving to be successful at these learning goals by the end of the course.
As a nurse manager at my present at my present job, I want to be a role model to all other employees who directly report under my supervision. I want to empower them. I want to let them become aware that it is not too late to advance their careers if for whatever reason they might have put it on hold. I have already put this learning goal into action at my job and have started seeing positive response. I have made an impact on one of my hard working nursing assistants my unit. I used my own living experience to motivate her into going back to school.
I explained how I worked my way up the lather from being a very young motivated nursing assistant who have strived her way to becoming a nurse manager. I told her the sky is her limit. She had worked as a nursing assistant in different areas in acute hospitals and nursing homes. I assisted her to check with the Licensing board for vocational nursing and how she can use her years of experience as a nursing assistant in order to qualify her to challenge for the LVN boards.
Indeed she was given the forms which I helped her to complete. She was then given credits for all of the medical and surgical areas. Right now, she is taking classes in pharmacology and mental health areas at which she is doing very well at. I feel so proud to have used my own experience, role as a nurse manager to make a difference in someone else’s life. These are one of rewarding stories as a nurse I like to be acknowledged for.
The two topics that really interest me most are module 1: Getting Started and module 6: Team work, Communication, Change, and Informatics. Like I stated in my discussion assignment in module 1, getting started really align very well with my learning goals. Deciding to go back to school was the biggest challenge for me, but after taking two classes already and this class being my third at Aspen University, I am getting to feel very comfortable and motivated to succeed in each course.
I feel very happy to be able to make realistic goals for myself. Getting started will be very beneficial to my present position because it will help me advance in my career, give me knowledge to be more efficient in my present role as a nurse manager and will also help to open more doors for advancement in the health care field. I can be an advocate to my employees that one way to secure their jobs is to further their education and to retrain or advance their career so they can compete for higher paid positions.
Module 6 of our course topic really resonate very well as a big topic of discussion relating to all the improvement at a glance I have seen at my present job for the past 7 years. I believe that the computer industry, whilst creating new technologies through informatics, have made lives and jobs easier and have and have also helped to transform average health care workers into super workers. The health care informatics has indeed helped to build up strong team work and have helped to improve communications and quality of patient care in my facility.
With the computer systems, all health care information are stored and can be easily retrieved with an icon and can speed up procedures, appointments and lab results. I do believe that as an older nurse, I was very apprehensive and felt very uncomfortable towards the implementations of all of the computer systems in health care , but with time, training and positive commitments to progress, about 80% of most employees at my work place have acknowledged the transitions to new informatics been a success.
The prerequisites to success were really ourselves. We showed a lot of motivation to learn builds strong team work; we communicated and even became delegated super users to train new employees. We made ourselves available 24/7 and even spend more time with employees who were still having hard time to move on with these new technological changes.
After years of transitioning EHRS at my job, there have been tremendous improvements made through communication, great team work which had led to decreased medication errors and sentinel events.
According to Canadian Journals of Nursing Informatics, a study was done which aimed at “To explore the perceptions of nurses about the use of a hospital information system” (HIS). Results were that the survey response rate was 80% (140/70) nurses responded and the resultant Cronbach’s alpha statistic was 0.78. Generally, 87.9% of respondents utilized HIS in their daily practice system characteristics identified by the nurses as beneficial included timeliness, reliability, data completeness and accuracy of information.
The topics that least interests me were module 3: legal and ethical issues and module 5: EBP, quality and safety standards, and politics have been implemented at all workforces from modern time and have laid a ground rule for all areas of work. At my work place, these topics don’t really need to be emphasized on as it has been well established.
